Critical Mass explores the science of overpopulation, drawing parallels between human society and Dr. John B. Calhoun’s famous “Universe 25” behavioural experiments. Through interviews, archival material and scientific analysis, the film examines how population density, stress and resource scarcity shape human behaviour and societal stability.

I worked with director Mike Freedman on the structure and the pacing for his vision. The thing that made it work was making the Calhoun experiments the spine of the documentary, and harnessing Mike’s fantastic sense of humour along the way.
